Odd Botanicals

The strange overlooked, occasionally unruly plants we can't leave the hell alone.

Tagetes

Tagetes minuta – the unruly one

Sharp.   Green.  BItter.  Wildly herbaceous.  A little fruity, a little strange, and absolutely not interested in smelling pretty.

What the hell is it?

Tagetes minuta is a fiercly aromati member of the marigold family.  Native to South America and now found growing wild in plenty of places it wasn't invited, it produces an essential oil with an intensely green, fruity–herbal aroma that is almost impossible to mistake for anything else.

Why the hell would I use it?

Because Tagetes has teeth.  It's intensely green aroma can add a sharp, unexpected edge to a blend especially when sweeter florals, citrus, woods, or resins need something wild to keep them from behaving too nicely.  A tiny amount can completely change the character of a formula.

What's the catch?

Tagetes is potent–and it comes with rules.  The essential oil is phototoxic, meaning topical use followed by UV exposure can cause serious skin reaction and burns.  It also has a very low dermal-use limit, so this is not an oil for casual "couple extra drops" blending.,  Respect the chemistry, measure carefully, and keep it out of the sunshine.

Botanical Fuckery Verdict

Not a crowd–pleaser.  Not a beginner oil.  Not remotely boring.

Tagetes is what happens when a botanical walks into the apothecary, kicks over a chair, and makes the entire blend more interesting.  Use a little.  Respect a lot.
