Clove Bud (Syzygium aromaticum)


Clove essential oil-

Latin name:  Syzygium aromaticum

Extraction method:  Hydro or steam distillation

Parts used:  Dried bud.

Countries of Origin:  IndiaMadagascar, Indonesia

Point of interest:  Native to Moluccas.  Used in China to sweeten the breath and ease toothache. (Battaglia) 

Perfumery note:  Base.

Color:  Clear to yellow.

Aroma:  Sweet, spicy, woody.

Properties:  Contact an aromatherapist

Energetics:  Chakras-Crown, navel, solar plexus, third eye.  TCM-

Blends well with:  Basil, Benzoin, Black Pepper, Cinnamon, Citronella, Grapefruit, Jasmine, Lemon, Nutmeg, Orange, Peppermint, Rose, Rosemary, Ylang Ylang.  

Mode of application:  Massage-very dillute as could cause skin irritation.  Topical-salve or ointment.  Inhalation, diffuser.  

Safety information:  Dermal irritant.  Max dermal is 0.5% (Tisserand & Young)  No contraindications known.  Clove oil is toxic at high doses i.e. 0.5 mg/kg.  May cause CNS depression, liver damage, seizures.  DO NOT TAKE INTERNALLY!.  Keep away from children.
